AI agents for Salesforce account research
Account managers and CSMs know they should research accounts before every renewal, QBR, or expansion conversation — but the research takes long enough that it often doesn't happen. AI agents connected to Salesforce can do the account research automatically: pulling CRM history, finding recent company news, assessing health signals, and producing a briefing the rep reads on the way to the call.
Why account research gets skipped
The information exists. It's in Salesforce, in support tickets, in Slack threads, in public news. The problem is that pulling it together takes 30–45 minutes per account — and account managers typically have 50–100 accounts.
For renewals: the math doesn't work. Reps triage. They research the accounts that feel risky, skip the ones that seem safe, and sometimes get surprised.
For QBRs: research happens, but it's compressed. The rep reads last quarter's notes ten minutes before the call, pulls a metric or two, and hopes the customer doesn't ask about something they haven't checked.
What AI agents handle
An Envelope team connected to Salesforce monitors upcoming renewals and QBRs and produces a comprehensive briefing for each account — automatically, before the rep needs to think about it.
The agents
Account Historian pulls the full Salesforce record for the account: contract value, renewal date, product lines, support tier, key contacts, last 12 months of activity notes, open opportunities, and any flagged risks. It also pulls the last three support ticket summaries from the linked support system.
Company Researcher looks up the account externally: recent news, leadership changes, funding events, product launches, and any public signals about the company's direction or financial health. Acquisitions, layoffs, new leadership, and expansion moves are flagged explicitly.
Health Scorer combines the internal record with the external research to produce a health score and a risk classification: healthy (likely to renew and expand), at risk (signals of churn or downgrade), or unknown (insufficient data to assess). It includes a one-paragraph rationale.
Brief Writer compiles everything into a pre-call briefing: account overview, current contract and renewal date, health assessment and rationale, key contacts and relationship history, recent company news, suggested topics to raise, and potential risks to address. The brief is attached to the Salesforce record and sent to the rep's email.
Setting this up in Envelope
- Describe the team: "Seven days before any renewal or QBR, read the Salesforce account record, research the company externally, assess health, and produce a pre-call briefing for the account manager."
- Connect your Salesforce account under Tools.
- Set the trigger: close date approaching (for renewals), or a QBR date field in Salesforce.
- Define your health scoring criteria: what signals constitute "at risk" in your business — support ticket volume, low usage data, payment delays, key contact changes.
- Specify the briefing format and where to deliver it: Salesforce note, email to the rep, Slack message, or all three.
- Run the team on a historical account to validate the briefing quality before enabling it live.
What the account manager gets
Seven days before the renewal call, an email arrives with a two-page briefing:
Acme Corp — renewal briefing £48,000 ARR | Renewal: 15 June | Health: At risk
Why at risk: Support ticket volume increased 40% in Q1, primarily around the API integration. Three tickets remained open for more than 7 days. Key champion Sarah Chen left the business in March; replacement (James Park) has not been onboarded.
Recent company news: Acme announced a Series B in April (£12M). Headcount expected to grow 30% in 2025 — potential expansion opportunity if the onboarding gap is addressed.
Suggested topics: Champion transition plan, API support experience, expansion roadmap given Series B growth.
The rep walks into the renewal call knowing exactly what to address.
Variations worth building
Expansion signal monitor — rather than waiting for renewal triggers, the team monitors all accounts weekly for expansion signals: new job postings in teams using your product, funding announcements, acquisitions that bring new departments in scope.
Churn risk weekly scan — every Monday, the team reads all accounts flagged "at risk" and produces a ranked list for the CS team: who's most at risk this week, what the specific signals are, and what action is recommended.
Post-call update writer — after a QBR or renewal call, the rep speaks a brief voice note into the team, and it writes the Salesforce activity log, updates the health score, and drafts any follow-up emails discussed on the call.
